An Outdoor Haven: Rock Climbing in Las Vegas
Las Vegas is known for decadence, amusement, and glam, but this oasis in the desert is also a hot spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Less than 20 miles away from the infamous Strip is Red Rock Canyon. A haven for hikers, photographers, bicycle riders, horseback riders and, lately, an increasing number of rock climbers.
Red Rock Canyon is a magnificent collection of sandstone dating 600 million years with weather forming the stunning monoliths and natural arches that stand today. The natural grooves and rock erosions make it possible for thousands of routes to climb.
While Red Rock’s sandstone is, at times, fragile it takes assimilation and understanding of the terrain to climb. Be sure to avoid climbing within a couple of days following a rainstorm, as you will be battling crumbling, soft rock in your hands. With twists and turns in the trails, locating the perfect secluded spot is easy. Right now, the weather is ideal for climbing the canyon, with a slight chill in shadowy areas.
There are a number of crags to choose from rating 5.6 to 5.11c including Whiskey Peak – Frogland, Eagle Wall – Eagle Dance, Black Orpheus Buttress – Black Orpheus, and many more.
On several heavy-traffic routes, you'll already find bolted anchors. But you’ll still need to pack the following:
- good climbing shoes
- nuts – including doubles
- bolts (lots of them)
- additional rap slings and rap rings
- helmet
- a vehicle day pass ($7) or year pass ($30)
Red Rock's weather is commonly idyllic in spring and fall with areas for all skill levels. For those unsure about the climb, it’s easy to book a guided rock climbing tour with local experts who know the terrain and can assist in fine tuning your skills. Try the American Alpine Institute and edge out your climbing technique even further as this group caters to all levels from beginners to advanced. A group tour includes the price of a day pass or it's 7 dollars at the entrance of the canyon.
