The Plaza Steps Into The LIMELIGHT With New Great Gatsby Era Production

It’s time to take a trip back to when prohibition was in full swing and the underground world of booze, tobacco and all-around depravity was an attractive lifestyle for many.

Opening this Friday, Sept. 12 is the high-energy, cheeky new show LIMELIGHT premiering at The Plaza Hotel & Casino. It’s a chance to experience a unique twist and creative endeavor onstage. A show that breaks the commonality and norm of the regular Vegas scene by integrating a strong storyline portrayed through dancing, singing, comedic vignettes, and awe-inspiring costumes.

“It’s the wild side of the roaring twenties,” said Danial Brown, one of the stars of the show and one of the producers. “So really what we do is take the black and white film era, specifically Charlie Chaplin films, and we bring them into this modern time-modern day burlesque – we say burlesque, but it’s really more of a vaudeville show.”

And vaudeville it is. With characters like a badboy Charlie Chaplin (played by Brown), dancing showgirls who journey through this incredibly salacious world as well as Betty Boop who navigates the Technicolor world as a black and white figure.

“We actually filmed our own Charlie Chaplin-style film and we step off the screen and on to the stage and become Technicolor before your eyes,” Brown said. “It’s a really interesting, fun, unique concept.”

The creators of the show – Jodie McDonald and Brown – have been friends for years and have worked together for 10 years. Brown is a world-renowned actor whose talents have taken him from Broadway in New York to L.A. and even Australia. McDonald, a phenomenal choreographer, dancer and burlesque star has also worked as an L.A. Laker Girl. Through their friendship they created the production company Ridicula Imitatio two years ago.

“It means burlesque in Latin,” said McDonald. “And it really literally means ‘ridiculous interpretation,’ which is actually what we kind of really are.”

The show twists and turns between modern-day influences to throwbacks from the great Bob Fosse, Jack Cole and Busby Berkeley. Even the music ranges from 1920’s classics to modern-day sounds by musicians like will.i.am.

“It’s a high-energy dance show with elements of burlesque, elements of playfulness, elements of sexiness,” said McDonald.

Brown added that “Vegas is fun, Vegas is really growing in the entertainment industry – it’s always been huge, but I think with the old school kind of shows it kind of went away, and it has come back.”

Those looking for a spectacular way to spend an evening in a classic Sinatra-style theatre to see an elegant and unique show, head to The Plaza every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 10 p.m. from Sept. 12 through Nov. 1.

“The Plaza Theatre is such a gorgeous, vintage room and it’s perfect for our show,” said Brown. “It’s really unique and you have to see it to believe it, it’s a very visual character-driven show.”
